A reply to the above enquiry. Dear Mrs A___. Your question as to "the old things" that have passed away has been the means of causing me to look at some passages of the Word, and I have discovered that the Holy Scriptures set up a higher standard than what seems to satisfy our standard professors. "Having, therefore, these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." In connection with the passage to which you refer there are blessed openings of wisdom and love that breed admiration. "All things are of God who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ." O what cause for burning shame if we do not adorn such doctrine! "We beseech you, also, that ye receive not the grace of God in vain, for he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee." "If you will not hear, and if you will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the Lord of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I wil curse your blessings; yea, I have cursed them already because ye do not lay it to heart." "It is written in the prophets, And they shall be taught of God. Every man, therefore, that hath heard and hath learned of the Father cometh unto me." "He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me, and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him." "If I had not come and spoken unto them they had not had sin, but now they have no cloke for their sin."
I trust that you are not wearied of sound doctrine. I do feel pleased that you are remembering me in my bondage. "Fools for their sin and their offence do sore affliction bear," &c., &c.
